BIWTA starts drives to free Turag River from illegal occupants

TRIBUNAL DESK: The Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) yesterday started eviction drives on both sides of the river Turag in Tongi Bazar, Abdullahpur and Kamarpara area, on the outskirts of the capital city yesterday, with a view to freeing the river from illegal occupants.

“We have started eviction of illegal structures built on both sides of the river Turag at Tongi and its adjoining areas this morning and continued till 3pm,” executive magistrate of BIWTA Shamima Banu Shanti, who led the drive, told BSS yesterday .

She said the drives would continue and exemplary punishments would be given to the illegal occupants whoever they might be in line with the government commitment to free the river from grabbers.

Among others, BIWTA officials Md Joynal Abedin, Mizanur Rahman and a large number of law enforcers, were present during the eviction drive.
