TRIBUNAL DESK: Several Jubo League activists have been accused of looting and vandalising five houses in Savar.
They are being accused of looting valuables including cash, electronic items, jewellery worth at least Tk30lakh, important land documents and domestic animals from five houses in Savar Friday evening.
The looting is centred around the death of Jubo League leader Jahangir Hossain.
Ashraf Ali, a local resident in Savar’s Dattapara area, said his youngest son Topu and Jahangir had an argument over a trivial matter Thursday evening.
“When my eldest son Mosharraf Karim Opu heard about the argument, he came and intervened, and a scuffle broke out.”
He continued: “At one point, Jahangir got injured and was taken to the hospital, where he later died.”
The following day followers of Jubo League leader Selim Mondol allegedly went into Ashraf’s house and started beating the family members. Terrified, they ran away, after which the Jubo League members ransacked the place, and four neighbouring houses.
However when contacted, Savar Jubo League President Selim Mondol utterly denied the allegations of looting and vandalism, and instead blamed the victims for causing the incident themselves.
When contacted, Savar Model police station Sub-Inspector Ibne Farhad, also the investigation officer of Jubo League leader Jahangir murder case, denied having any knowledge of the alleged looting and vandalism.
“No one has the right to attack family members of even a criminal. We will take necessary action if we receive any complaint about the incident,” he said.
