President for creating volunteers to cut disaster losses


(UNB) – President Md Abdul Hamid on Monday emphasized on creating trained manpower and volunteers as well as raising mass awareness to reduce the losses due to natural disasters.

“It’s quite impossible to stop or control the natural calamities . . . But the losses due to the natural disasters can be reduced significantly by increasing mass awareness as well as educational activities”, said President Md Hamid while addressing the opening of the 13th National Youth Red Crescent Camp 2017 of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BRCS) at Osmani Memorial Auditorium on Monday afternoon.

President Hamid said Bangladesh is situated in the earthquake-prone area. “We have to take overall plan keeping in mind about various natural calamities, including earthquake and we have to inform people about instant possible task, which is not possible for the government alone,” he said adding that for this reason it is very urgent to build trained manpower and volunteers taking help from international volunteer’s organisations.

About different pragmatic steps taken by the present government to face the various catastrophes, the President said Bangladesh’s resilience in addressing the adverse impact of the climate change gained appreciation globally.

“You (youths) are also a part of that success”, he added.

The President hoped that a strong volunteers’ network of BRCS would be created with the skilled youths.

Noting that the youth is the future of the country to build a prosperous nation dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the President hoped that the youth forces would help usher in a new dawn in honest and true way staying above all sorts of superstations.

President Hamid thanked the youths specially the students who are involved in different humanitarian services beside their academic activities.

“You have to think what Bangladesh you want in 2021, when country will observe its golden jubilee,” the President said, adding that the youth must play a very significant role to materialize the Vision-2021 and the Vision 2041 and build a hunger-free and poverty-free “Sonar Bangla” envisioned by the Father of the Nation.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim, BRCS Chairman Hafiz Ahmed Mazumder, BDRCS Vice-Chairman and member of the IFRC (international Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Dr M Habibe Millat, BRCS Secretary General BMM Mozaharul Haque also spoke on the occasion.
