Save the surplus for bad days

Ours is a land of potentials with immense possibilities. It has so many attractions as well due to diversified culture & rich heritage with long history. Since time immemorial people from different blood, color, creed & culture of various origin visited this land on account of trade and commerce, tourism or got settled being attracted by its affluence and beauty. But instead of being a land of affluence & beauty Bangladesh had to pass through famine, wants, miseries because of vagary of nature. Sometimes, people had to face famine or famine-like situation owing to man-made manipulation, mechanization etc. However, this indomitable sons of the soil did never surrender either to famine or to the vagary of nature in the form of tidal upsurge, flood, diseases, epidemics and any other unforeseen calamities. Bangladesh,of its being a land of alluvial fertile soil having dales & vales, wetland with rivers & rivulets is never likely to face famine or starvation if the agricultural inputs are made available in time at the doorsteps of the farmers ,modern agro-based technology is applied and the farmers are accordingly trained up in line with the methodology and modus-operandi.
During the last continuous few years Bangladesh is steadily going forward with surplus cereal food crops, tuber crops, fruits & vegetables, fishes , cattle products & resources. Bangladeshis now holding the 4th and 5th position in vegetables & fish productions respectively in the world. Some few lac tons of vegetables, fishes & fruits are being exported to different countries including European Union, Middle East, & USA. Another few lac tons of potatoes have been exported to Srilanka, Viet Nam, Cambodia & Mongolia. Once a deficit country in food staff is now surplus & turned into food grains exporting country within less than half a decade. It has been made possible only through research, supply of inputs in time and constant education of the farmers by the extension workers, application of modern agro-technology inclusive of genetically modified production. On the 2nd– 4th of January, an exhibition of vegetables has been organized by the agricultural extension personnel at Khamarbari wherein a gorgeous show & bonanza of both country &foreign origin were put up. It is an indication that the people in Bangladesh will now be able to combat the nutrition deficiency by next few years with the intake of more &more vegetables. During the preceding years it has been frequently put up in the media that huge quantity of different types of vegetables have been left over in the haats & bazars, at the farmlands by the farmers due to non availability of buyers & proper price at the farmers level. In most of places the precious vegetables were used as fodders. This is sad& shocking. Government should take proper initiative to protect the interest of the farmers & ensure proper price of the produces to encourage the farmers to produce more & more to keep the market prices stable both in season & off the season. Government should immediately take appropriate measures to establish sufficient spaces to preserve the vegetables, fruits & other agro-produces under controlled temperatures on Public-Private-Partnership projects so that all these surplus products are not allowed to go in wastes and the farmers get proper prices. Let us save the surplus for bad days to keep the price stable &to make vegetables available throughout the year.
